Super Bowl Sunday
Posted by chuck maxwell on February 2nd, 2009 filed in Chuck's blogYesterday was Super Bowl Sunday and something happened that, as far as I know, has never happened, at least in our area. And it had nothing to do with football. There were no fireworks, media coverage, or rock stars present. A Baptist church launched in the city of Jackson with a vision of seeing the reconciling gospel modeled in a tangible way through a multi-ethnic congregation. 75 or so folks gathered in the little storefront building that will be a gathering place for City Fellowship for the next few years. I looked back on Northbrook’s launch service when 68 were in attendance. It was not Super Bowl Sunday but it too was something the likes of which had never happened in our area. For me, our launch in 1993, and yesterday’s CFBC launch was a little surreal, a little relief, a little pride, a little fear, and a lot of humility. And I wasn’t even part of the service or the core group! But it is an awesome experience. I’m sure winning the Super Bowl is a feeling like no other. A once in a lifetime thing, unless your Ben Roethlisberger. But I pray that the feeling of experiencing the beginning of new gospel centered and driven congregations happens many times more in my life, and in our church’s life. Let’s pray that God does things through CFBC, and through Northbrook Church, that only He can do.
