nothing new in ministry

Things really haven’t changed much since I began working in church as a youth minister the summer of 1978. When we would have an event like white water rafting or a retreat to the beach, kids would come out of the woodwork. But if we had a time for some serious disicpleship, we would have 2, or on a good day, 4. Even today, promoting and hosting a time to come together to pray for our neighborhood or other aspects of our church community or spiritual development, will not draw a very big crowd compared to Sunday morning. As long as I have been in church, it has been that way. The deeper the commitment required, the fewer there are willing to adjust for it. I hate to get into why I think that is. I get convicted. But it just ought not to be that way!

Just wondering, are these (those who love rafting or whatever and never show to pray or go deeper) that will be surprised and say, “Lord, Lord . . and He will say, depart from me I never knew you.” ? I guess that’s why the Apostle Paul told the Corinthian believers to “test” themselves to make sure they were in the faith. Testing, 1, 2, 3.
